Combat the rising cost of heating your home this winter by implementing the following tips:
- Turn down your thermostat. Set it to 68 degrees. Wear socks or a sweater around the house if it's a little chilly. Set it even lower at night and while you're away. Invest in a programmable thermostat that will automatically adjust at certain times of the day. Every degree you lower your thermostat can save you up to 3% on your heating bill. Make sure that daily fluctuations are less than 10 degrees and if you have a heat pump leave it at a consistent temperature.
- Have your furnace inspected, check heating ducts for gaps or cracks, and change your furnace filter monthly.
- Winterize your home. Replace cracked or torn gasket seals around doors. Use weather stripping and caulk around drafty windows. Seal up windows with plastic film available at all home improvement stores. Insulate hot water pipes. Make sure you have a minimum of R-30 insulation in the attic.
- Turn your water heater down to 120% or less and wrap it in an insulated water heater blanket.
- Close off and seal up the fireplace to avoid drafts when not in use. Close off unused rooms, shutting vents and returns. Put a blanket or towel across the bottom of the door to stop drafts. Close blinds and drapes at night to keep heat in and open them during the day to let the sun help heat your home.
- If you use propane or fuel oil, make your first order in the late summer before prices go up. Try to negotiate delivery contracts for the entire winter to lock in a lower price.
- Enroll in your gas company's budget plan. This will spread the cost across the entire year.

- If after all you can do you find yourself having trouble with heating costs this winter contact your gas company and inquire about programs for low or fixed income households.
